Walmart Files for Patent: “In-Field Authenticating of Autonomous Robots”

Walmart, the largest physical retailer in the US, has applied for a patent with the USPTO to protect a blockchain system for deliveries, according to an official patent documentation released on August 30.

It aims to provide a tech for running “autonomous electronic devices” to enable secure and safe deliveries. It states that this “in-field authenticating” device can:

“exemplary embodiments, two autonomous electronic devices, such as delivery drones or household autonomous robots, can authenticate each other using embodiments of security procedures described herein.”

And the patent was filed in January 2018 by Wal-Mart Stores Inc. It’s entitled “Systems, Devices, and methods for In-Field Authenticating of Autonomous Robots” and includes a whole description of operating many robots or drones that conduct logistics of packages all across their supply chain. They’re intended to operate on signals sent over the air that enable blockchain-powered authentic of the device IDs.

It’ll be useful in the process of recording authentication signals and data which is a target for hackers:

“Updates to the blockchain may comprise authentication signals or identification information, and one or more nodes on the system may be configured to incorporate one or more updates into blocks to add to the distributed database.”

This isn’t the first patent Walmart has filed for int he US. They’ve mainly been doing so in order to help them keep pace with rivals, like Amazon. They also applied for a patent on systems and methods for managing smart appliances via blockchain which allows users to customize levels of access for objects at home or portable devices. They also patented a blockchain-powered delivery control system that can protect deliveries until buyers sign and collect for them.

Blockchain-powered technology is proving to be useful in the retail industry. As one giant incorporates, others must in order to keep up.
